Convert MOV to OGG

A voice line or an interview recorded as a MOV, and a game or a website that wants only the sound? Save it as an OGG, which keeps the audio and carries no picture.
MOV or OGG?
Keep MOV when
- The picture matters too. The OGG holds only the sound.
- The sound should stay as it is. MOV to OGG loses a little more.
Pick OGG when
- A game, an app or a website asks for OGG files.
About MOV and OGG
MOV
Apple's QuickTime video format. What iPhones and Macs record and edit in; other devices often need it converted first.
OGG
A free, open audio format. Popular in games and open-source software.
Questions
Which quality should I pick?
The commands use quality 6, a common middle ground between size and sound. Change -q:a 6 to a lower number for a smaller file or a higher one for more detail, 0 to 10.
Does the sound get worse?
A little. The sound in an MOV is already compressed, and converting it to OGG drops a bit more. Keep the MOV as the master copy.
What happens to the video?
The OGG holds only the sound. The MOV stays as it is.
Why does the Mac line use a different encoder?
Homebrew's FFmpeg has no libvorbis, so the Mac line uses FFmpeg's own Vorbis encoder; -strict -2 turns it on. It writes stereo only, so -ac 2 makes a mono file two channels. Windows uses libvorbis.
Do the title and artist stay?
With the FFmpeg lines, yes: FFmpeg carries tags such as the title across to the OGG.
