A short clip from an iPhone, or a Mac screen recording, can loop as a GIF in a chat, a comment or a page. It plays without sound and is never wider than 480 px.
MOV or GIF?
Keep MOV when
- The video has sound or has to stay sharp. A GIF holds neither.
Pick GIF when
- A short clip has to play on a loop without a play button.
About MOV and GIF
MOV
Apple's QuickTime video format. What iPhones and Macs record and edit in; other devices often need it converted first.
GIF
Best known for simple animations and reaction images. Not great for photos, since it only supports 256 colors.
Questions
Why is the GIF so large?
A GIF stores every frame as a picture, so the size grows with the length of the clip. Keep it to a few seconds.
How do I make the GIF smaller?
In the command, lower the 10 in fps=10 or the 480 in min(480,iw). A shorter clip helps most.
Why do the colours look rough?
A GIF holds at most 256 colours. The palette part of the command picks the 256 colours from this clip instead of a fixed set.
How long can the GIF from Clipchamp be?
Clipchamp saves up to 15 seconds of video as a GIF.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. A GIF holds only pictures.
