Add a file first

Need a sound file for a game, a web app, or an open-source player, and all you have is an MP4? Keep the audio as an OGG. The picture is left out, so what you get is sound only.

MP4 or OGG?

Keep MP4 when

  • The picture matters too. The OGG holds only the sound.
  • The sound should stay as it is. MP4 to OGG loses a little more.

Pick OGG when

  • A game, an app or a website asks for OGG files.

About MP4 and OGG

MP4

The most widely used video format. It plays on most phones, computers and platforms, and is the usual way video is shared.

OGG

A free, open audio format. Popular in games and open-source software.

Questions

Which quality should I pick?

The commands use quality 6, a common middle ground between size and sound. Change -q:a 6 to a lower number for a smaller file or a higher one for more detail, 0 to 10.

Does the sound get worse?

A little. The sound in an MP4 is already compressed, and converting it to OGG drops a bit more. Keep the MP4 as the master copy.

What happens to the video?

The OGG holds only the sound. The MP4 stays as it is.

Why does the Mac line use a different encoder?

Homebrew's FFmpeg has no libvorbis, so the Mac line uses FFmpeg's own Vorbis encoder; -strict -2 turns it on. It writes stereo only, so -ac 2 makes a mono file two channels. Windows uses libvorbis.

Do the title and artist stay?

With the FFmpeg lines, yes: FFmpeg carries tags such as the title across to the OGG.
