Convert MKV to OGG

Settings appear after you choose a file.

Add a file first

A game, a demo, or an open-source player needs the sound from an MKV. Save it as an OGG, an audio-only file with the picture removed.

MKV or OGG?

Keep MKV when

  • The picture matters too. The OGG holds only the sound.
  • The sound should stay as it is. MKV to OGG loses a little more.

Pick OGG when

  • A game, an app or a website asks for OGG files.

About MKV and OGG

MKV

Questions

Which quality should I pick?

The commands use quality 6, a common middle ground between size and sound. Change -q:a 6 to a lower number for a smaller file or a higher one for more detail, 0 to 10.

What does the copy line do?

It works when the MKV already holds Vorbis; ffprobe clip.mkv shows the codec. The copy line moves the sound into an OGG as it is, so nothing is lost. For any other sound, use the first line.

Why does the Mac line use a different encoder?

Homebrew's FFmpeg has no libvorbis, so the Mac line uses FFmpeg's own Vorbis encoder; -strict -2 turns it on. It writes stereo only, so -ac 2 makes a mono file two channels. Windows uses libvorbis.

What if the MKV has several audio tracks?

FFmpeg takes the first one. Add -map 0:a:1 after -vn to take the second.

Do the title and artist stay?

With the FFmpeg lines, yes: FFmpeg carries tags such as the title across to the OGG.
